The State Budget for 2024-25 has allocated ₹5 crore for the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB), the biennial festival of contemporary arts. This allocation comes as part of the government's continued support for the internationally renowned event.
In the previous budget, the government had earmarked ₹7 crore for the fifth edition of the Biennale, which took place from December 2022 to April 10, 2023. The event, which cost approximately ₹23 crore to execute, featured 87 artists and spanned 14 venues across Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.
The fifth edition of KMB attracted over nine lakh visitors, marking the highest attendance in the festival’s decade-long history. The substantial turnout underscored the festival's growing influence and importance in the global art scene.
With the new allocation, the government aims to sustain and enhance the festival's impact, promoting cultural exchange and tourism in the region.
